Durga Puja, is a Hindu Festival, which is celebrated each year on the occasion of Navaratri. This festival is also called as Durgotsava and during this festival, Goddess Durga is worshipped. Durga Puja is celebrated for 10 days, with more enthusiasm in the last 4 days and during this time period, many rituals like decorating the pandals where God and Goddess statue are kept.

This festival denotes the victory of Good over Evil. In Durga Puja, the primarily Goddess Durga is worshipped and occupies the central position in the stage decoration. The first day of this festival begins with Mahalaya, marking the beginning of the destruction of Evil. On this day, statues kept in the pandals are carried to the river and the ocean, where they are immersed. This ritual denotes a form of bidding Good bye to God and Goddesses.

Each God and Goddesses are worshipped for various reasons, during this festival. Goddess Durga is considered to the Goddess of Strength and she rides a lion, holding ten different weapons in her ten hands. Some people do worship at home with all the arrangements and they also go for statue immersion to the river Ganga at the last day.

Navratri or Durga Pooja is celebrated to tribute the victory of good over evil. It is believed that on this day the goddess Durga got victory over the bull demon Mahishasura. She was called by the god Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva to kill the demon and make the world free of him.

After many days of battle, she finally killed the demon on the tenth day, the day is called as Dussehra. The real meaning of Navratri is the nine days and nights of the battle between goddess and devil.

The tenth day is celebrated as Vijayadashami as at this day goddess Durga got victory over a demon. It is a very popular religious and socio-cultural event being celebrated for years with complete devotion by the devotees.

A huge Durga Pooja fair and Ramlila is organized in the grounds which attracts the big crowd of people. The festival of Durga Pooja was first performed in Bengal by a Zamindar then it came to be popular with the introduction of the sarvojanik pujas performed with the joint efforts of twelve Zamindars and it is called barwari.
